Special Applications
Grafting, polycondensation, cross linking, and other reactive operations are possible in an extruder. Residence times can be matched to a wide range of processes by using special high volume screw elements.
Devolatilization
Removal of volatiles is practical in a twin screw extruder because the controlled pressure gradient inherent with the starved fed twin screw process prevents vent flooding.
Vents can be sequenced and the small melt pool combines excellent surface to volume ratios with high surface renewal. Configurations for coarse and fine devolatilization, with or without the use of stripping agents, are common.
